Skaters on the Bonkevaart, a canal near Leeuwarden. The yellow line is the finish line of the Elfstedentocht, a 200 km skating match on natural ice, between the eleven cities in the province Friesland (Frisia). Despite the fact that is is freezing unuasally hard in the rest of the country, the ice in Freiesland is still way too thin to a let the thousands of participants safely skate on it. It is unlikely that the match will be held anytime soon.
Schaatsers op de Bonkevaart passeren de finishlijn van de Elfstedentocht. In tegenstelling tot de strenge vorst in de rest van het land is het in Friesland overdag licht aan het dooien, waardoor plassen water op het ijs staan en er zelfs wakken en open plekken zijn. Het is daarom niet erg waarschijnlijk dat er spoedig een Elfstedentocht zal kunnen worden gehouden.
